What/Where Is This?

What kind of building is this? Does any one know where this building may have been located or if it still exists. The word "DRAKE" is written on the chimney. The photo is from the 1940's.

Thanks to Anonymous for identifying the structure as the Drake Well. The building still exists and is located in Titusville, Pennsylvania. Edwin Drake struck oil at this site in 1859. If you would like to learn more about the Drake Well and the beginnings of the oil industry, please click here.

Ball Of Mystery

I recently acquired about 350 negatives dating from the 1920's to the 1940's. I will be posting some of them for all of you to see. The first negative has two women, a boy and a girl all standing by a large shiny ball. Does anyone recognize this place? The negative is from about 1925.

Thanks to Sebastian for identifying the “Ball Of Mystery” as the sundial that was formerly located on the campus of Columbia University. The ball has been removed but the pedestal remains.
If you wish to learn more about the very interesting history of the sundial, please click here.

A Visit From..............Dumbo?!

This baby doesn't seem to know what to make of the Dumbo stuffed animal that appears to have landed atop his high chair. On a more somber note, if you look next to Dumbo's ear, you will see a small flag with two stars. The flag is known as a Service Star Banner and each star represents a service member in active duty. This also serves as a clue in dating the photo to the 1940's.
