About Me
- Name: Ookpik
- Location: Michigan, United States
I began my interest in vernacular photography by a chance acquisition of over 10,000 negatives dating from the late 1920's through the early 1970's. Luckily, I knew what I had was something more than "someone's old pictures." This cache of old images became the impetus for me to create two Photoblogs: Ookpik’s Negativity and Mystery Ships Of The Great Lakes. Ookpik’s Negativity contains photos that I would like to know more about while Mystery Ships Of The Great Lakes features photos of ships that I am trying to identify.

It looks like a small tin toy tambourine in her hand - perhaps this was taken on the day of a fancy dress party or school show; 'Gypsy' fashions were all the rage in the forties - something to do with Balkan WWII refugees. It's strange to remember that as late as the seventies people who didn't have a shutterbug in the family often only had their photo taken once or twice a year outside of formal occasions, and the owner of the camera nearly never!
It's a box of face powder, and yes it's a real cat. I could say by the looks of her socks, it's a costume of some sort. I don't think girls wore that 'print' of bandana. I don't even think it's a vintage photo.
It's a real photo. She looks hot dressed like that and the thing in her hand looks like a cat dish, you know, so she can feed her REAL cat?
