Tough Times

The photo appears to have been taken at the height of the Depression. The guy really seems down on his luck. The junk strewn around the shacks consist of a sharpening stone, tires, car door, pitchfork and many other items.

And like all down-on-their luck folks, he has enough cash for smokes. He could use the sharpening stone on those bits of metal from cars, and go Road Warrior on someone's arse! :)

I would think that the picture is of a later date? His clothes and hairstyle looks like the 1950´s?

Hi Lasse,

Although the man's appearance may suggest to you that the photo is from the 1950's, I can assure you that it is not. The photo, actually a negative, came with a batch of other negatives that dated from the mid to late 1930's. Without going into long and probably boring details, various elements of the photo indicate that the 1930's is the most likely time frame. :)
