Busy Street Scene

Does anyome know where this photograph may have been taken?
It dates from the 1940's.

MikeM, a noted Detroit historian, identified the building on the right as the Lake Carrier's Association office in Detroit, Michigan. The building was located at the foot of 1st Avenue. The view of the photo is looking north up 1st Avenue, probably from the deck of a passenger liner at the D&C docks. The tall building in the background is the headquarters of the Michigan Bell Telephone Co, which was on Cass Avenue, but the backside would be on the east side of 1st Avenue.

Just a guess: Brooklyn, near the Navy Yard.

Too low to be Manhattan, too massive to be anywhere but NYC. Large brick building on the left could be Flushing Avenue. Or: maybe this photo is taken from on board a ship?

I see two signs on the right, a fragment of one on the left, are they readable on the original?

The top sign on the right appears to say:

Lake Carriers
Association
Assembly ?????

Hopefully someone will recognize the locale, that tall building in the back is distinctive.

But for the time being, here are the clues I see.

The Lake Carrier's Association ("...the trade association representing U.S.-Flag vessel operators on the Great Lakes...") is still around, based in Cleveland. And it's 100+ years old, I found a reference on the web from 1900.

At first I thought too big to be outside NYC, too. But on second look, it's not that dense.

The suits, ties, dresses and hats are interesting, a lot of these people are dressed up. A few are standing next to [overnight?] bags. Too big for purses, too small for luggage.

Cleveland? Detroit? Toronto? Buffalo?

I know Chicago well, and I don't think that's the place.

Good observations anonymous! Like you, I figured it must be a large Great Lakes city. I know Detroit fairly well and it does not appear to be Detroit. My guess is Cleveland.
